DLeihman32878
Is this the 21st Century version of Jim Baker? I'm sure many of you are familiar with Ted Haggard and New Life Church in Colorado Springs, CO. I'm sure many of you are familiar with his clout among evangelicals and the Republican Party. By now, I'm sure you are all familiar with the story that Haggard has admitted to buying meth and receiving a massage from a gay escort. I don't want this thread to turn into evangelical bashing or Republican bashing and I don't want this to turn into gay bashing either. I'm just curious with some things he told this reporter: http://video.msn.com/v/us/msnbc.htm?g=6ff5...=00&fg=copy Now, any Christian will tell you that no human is perfect. We are all tempted and we all are going to sin. When asked why he bought the meth, Rev. Haggard said that he was "tempted." Why would anyone be tempted to try meth. if they had never done the drug before? Meth is not a gateway drug. People who use meth., usually start with pot, move on to cocaine or some other upper and then experiment with meth. I find it hard to believe that Rev. Haggard had lived a drug free life and then all of a sudden was tempted to try meth. I mean, did he just all of a sudden wake up and think, "I wonder what meth is like?" You look at a meth user and it's not something that you would want. Other drugs can be marketed to look glamourous, remember the "heroin chic" movement in the world of fashion in the 1990's? Even the best advertising agent on Madison Avenue couldn't make meth appealing to the outside. In order to be tempted to use meth, Rev. Haggard must have used the drug previously. Regardless, it's a sad story and I hope that he is able to recover.

junglejim
Latest thing I saw has Haggard saying he bought meth "but didn't use it"-----didn't inhale? The accuser claims to have voicemails from Haggard that back up his story. Maybe Haggard might reconsider his hard stance on those "sinners"
DLeihman32878
I guess it illustrates that old saying, "don't throw stones in glass houses". I just read where he has officially resigned, which I think is appropiate. He is highly influential and needs some time away from his flock to sort things out. 50pinch
He doesn't need a flock. Sounds like he needs a frock. He also need to seriously reconcile with God and the people that he mislead.
Aggie2008
Sometimes the best things that happen to people are when their sins are exposed and they are seen for who they really are. Being broken and brought down from the pedestal he placed himself on was probably the best thing for him. He now only has God to depend on and not any of his pride and delusions of grandeur. But when you throw in that the person leads a congregation of thousands, is a leading opponnet of GAY marriage, and was speaking to the Prez or a member of his staff daily, a choke or a giggle would replace the yawn. HS1988
At the white house on mondays preaching against gays and advising the president. Tuesdays doing meth and being gay. Sounds like a real hypocrite. A lot like the guy our government had fighting internet predators during the day. But then at night he was one. And some of his peers suspected and even new of it and did nothing. My goodness, what is America coming to. Seems like a lot of gays hangin around Washington these days. Yes, there are hypocrites everywhere, including the White House and church leadership. It is a sad state of affairs.

What Haggard and Foley did was wrong, regardless of what party or evangelical affiliation they had. Embarassments and disappointments. Aggie2008 said he didn't want this to turn into, among other things, a republican bashing thread. Looks like you might be taking it in that direction. So to head that off, let me offer this. Barney Frank allowed a gay brothel to be run out of his apartment. Gary Studds raped a male, minor congressional page. You know what they did with them? RE-ELECTED THEM BOTH! So get off your self-righteous, "we don't do that" high horse.

Guest bleedsbluengold24
Why aren't they in prison? If the "they" you mentioned are Franks and Stubbs, well, Stubbs is dead. But his and Franks' scandalous dealings were brushed aside with a spank on the wrist and they went back to congress. If you want to include Foley in that group, it's not clear he has actually committed a crime, although his actions were deplorable. If it can be shown he was in possession of meth, etc, lock him up. People like him make me sick. They stand before a congregation, misrepresenting themselves, drawing what I am sure was, given the size of his church, a hefty salary, lying and condeming what they, themselves are involved in. And people wonder why Christians have a bad name these days.
