The List: Greatest individual streaks

By Jeff Merron

Lance Armstrong has won his fifth consecutive Tour de France to tie the record held by Spain's Miguel Indurain from 1991-'95. Like our top 10 individual streaks listed below, if Armstrong can win six in a row, it may never be beaten.

1. Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak -- ended July 17, 1941.

2. Edwin Moses' 107 straight hurdles finals wins -- for nine years, nine months, and nine days.

3. Orel Hershiser's 59 consecutive scoreless innings -- August 30 thru September 28, 1988, and breaking Don Drysdale's record by 1/3 of an inning.

4. Cal Ripken's 2,632 consecutive games streak -- ended September 20, 1998, breaking Lou Gehrig's previous record by 502 games.

5. Johnny Unitas's 47-game TD pass streak -- 1956 to 1960.

6. Rocky Marciano's 49-bout winning streak -- spring of 1947 through April, 1956. He retired undefeated.

7. Bjorn Borg's five straight Wimbledon titles -- between 1976 and 1980.

8. Cael Sanderson's 159 straight college wrestling wins at Iowa State. He finished his college career with a 159-0 record, having won four straight national titles. No other college wrestler has gone undefeated.

9. Wayne Gretzky's 51-game scoring streak -- 1983-1984. Gretzky had broken his own record, set in 1982-83, when he went 30 straight games with a goal or an assist.

10. Chick Hearn's 3,338 consecutive games broadcasting streak. The voice of the Lakers broadcast every Laker game between Nov. 21, 1965 and Dec. 16, 2001 -- 3,338 straight.

Also receiving votes:

Ted Williams, 16 straight times reaching base, 1957

Calvin Murphy, 78 straight free throws made, 1980-81

Martina Navratilova, six consecutive Wimbledon titles, 1982-87

Sonja Henie, 10 straight women's world figure skating championships, 1927-36

Remember guys --

not only are the moderators watching and reading, but the BIG SUPER ADMINISTRATOR IN THE SKY IS CHECKING IN FROM TIME TO TIME!!!!

blindref -- now that you mention it, I do remember reading about Wilt wearing "stilts" while working at his summer job at Kansas. He was a "tape and bedder" on tall celings in a local housing construction company.

Whew!!!!! That was close.

Amen, Brent -- amen!!!

Two consecutive no-hitters!!! Just think, Nolan Ryan threw 7 no-hitters -- but, never threw two in arow.

Of course, Ryan also threw ... 10 - 11 "one hitters"????

Brent ... did Ryan ever throw a "back-to-back" no-hitter/one-hitter, or two one-hitters?

I'll check & see what Ryan did before and after each of his no-hitters..........I know in 1973 he pitched two no-hitters & one 1-hitter.

BTW -- The last pitcher to pitch two-consecutive one-hitters was Toronto's Dave Stieb:

September 24, 1988

September 30, 1988

Nah, if people keep playing baseball in the future, eventually somebody's going to chunk a couple or three no-no's in a row.

Only if the future has improved pitching & four less Major League teams...

  • 2 years later...

Does Williams' record mean he reached base on 16 straight plate appearances? To me that number seems a little low to be a record, but now that I think about it how often do players go 4-4 or 5-5 in 3 or 4 consecutive games...

BTW, Pete Rose's hitting record will never come close to being touched.

Yes . . . from September 17-23, 1957:

  • 2 singles
  • 4 home runs (in 4 consecutive at-bats)
  • 9 walks
  • 1 HBP

Here's one:

Indians shortstop Joe Sewell played 115 consecutive games in 1929 (May 17 - September 19) without striking out :w00t:

I definitely think Johnny VanderMeer Wilt Chamberlin's single game scoring record should be on there.

While it was amazing, I think Hershiser's streak could eventually be broken. I would put it a little lower and Ripken's streak should be at least #2.

Yeah, I definitely think this record will be tied eventually.....but it will never be broken.

Jimmy Rollins is going into the season with a 30-game hit streak.

Hey ! Hey ! The preseason Baseball publications were released recently & one of them (can't remember if it was Street & Smith's or The Sporting News) mentioned that Major League Baseball issued a statement noting that should Rollins' streak exceed 57 games, it would go down as the "all-time" record & Joltin' Joe would still own the "single-season" record.
