was this waco team equally matched up and athletic?

They are athletic and have good size (6'8" & 6'5" Post players), but don't have much basketball skill. Whitehouse fought hard to get a 5 point lead with 2 minutes left and then blew it with bad shot selection, missed free throws and turnovers.

Waco had more athletic players than Whitehouse, but they were not very good outside shooters. The refs really let both teams play which really was not a help nor did it hurt WH. The problem was that WH younger players did not attack the basket, and Waco was good at blocking the slower outside shots of WH. That forced Mitch to penetrate and score, which he did, and when he wasn't Holmen had to hit mid range jumpers and score in the paint. For the most part WH was a two man offense: Mitch and Jacob.

Holmen had a great game, but there just was too many tall and physical players for him to face by himself. In the end, Waco eventually would use their quicks to penetrate and attack the basket for close range shots, while WH made mistakes with shot selection and timing. The game was WH's to lose and they gave Waco the small opening that was just enough for Waco to pull it out.

Extremely disappointing, the scouting report on Waco U was spot on....very aggressive, athletic and tall. Not much basketball skill tho. Just rough and aggressive and we don't respond well to that. Its just seems like it spells doom for us when we play a very aggressive in your face type team. I would have LOVED to see us drop back into a zone and dare those kids from Waco to shoot, because they couldn't. We got drove down the middle of the lane time after time after time. Mitch and Jacob were the the only offense....I feel bad for Trey after those missed free throws but you could nearly see that coming. I'm not sure what his free throw percentage was for the year but man we talked about it from the first game. I don't think he had any confidence at all that he was going to make those shots.

Unless there is something in 8th grade right now that I don't now about, or in 9th grade that really steps up.. I think its going to be a down year next year. Now by down I don't mean a losing record or anything...just not an out of this world win loss record like the past few years.

Great first season for Ryan Tomlin, though. He'll bounce back well next year. That's why he's one of the best.

Mantle - you are correct - WH will bounce back and Tomlin is one of the best. Not only does he coach a good game he builds relationships with these kids - which makes for a better team all around. :notworthy:

Great first season WH. You've got a lot to look forward to.

It certainly wasn't a lack of DEFENSE (or lack of zone,etc..) that cost us this game. The score was 53-50.... not 63-50 or 73-50. A lack of OFFENSE cost Whitehouse this game. I don't know how many trips down the court were awarded with absolutely nothing.... turnovers on bad passes, terrible shot selection and poor free throw accuracy all combined to cost Whitehouse this game.

It was an exciting season to watch. Unfortunately, our district just doesn't do much to prepare us for teams like this. Kudos to Coach Tomlin for playing the toughest competition available for warm-up and non-district play but it just doesn't give us experience with these tough teams going into the playoffs.

With the speed players (Trey, Quincy) returning and the off season to pump some more confidence and skills into the "twin-towers" and Nick, next year is sure to be exciting as well. Congrats to a great season Coach Tomlin, Mitch, Jacob and the rest of the team! Hopefully next year we can break the "Whitehouse playoff curse."

I'm pretty sure next year is going to be tough for whitehouse. Don't get me wrong they will probably win district but I can't see them getting very far past district. Losing there scorers in Jacob and mitch and there steady defense from justin Keller and Blake Anglin is gonna hurt them. I see next years team having a tough time putting points up against a good defense

Winning district isn't and hasn't been WH problem for the past several years. It's the playoffs.

So IMO I don't see a whole lot changing. They are in a weak district BBall wise.

They, or any other East Texas 4a team, are going to have a tough row to hoe when they meet up with inner city kids.

Having said that I think getting in the playoffs and winning a couple if your lucky will be the norm. If it's not, then that's the way it been for the past several years.

my two cents

Maybe I'm still confused from last spring. You make it to the Regional Tournament and your coach leaves??? With probably the best point guard and post man in the area returning???

I guess this is what Whitehouse was looking for. Someone to catch up with the times and get rid of Wally Ball and play some in your face defense and get the monkey off the basketball program's back.

This most recent playoff exit took me down memory lane because there was plenty of bashing of Coach Dawkins and his system for the EXACT same thing that happened this year. Just a few looks back at some old quotes:

QUOTE DfieldTiger1884 date='Feb 28 2008, 10:24 AM'

... but personally when you've been there that long and have never made it past the 2nd or 3rd round i really don't call that a b-ball program. I honestly hope WH can make it to Austin this year. I just think every year people in WH get caught up in the teams record and thinks they have a legit shot at austin when in reality they got that record by playing teams that are poor.

I thought Coach Tomlin had the guys prepared through scheduling this year?

As a person who knows alot about Whitehouse and Dawkins, I think IF Dawkins leaves, a new coach in Whitehouse would take the program farther than it has been in a long time. Nothing negative towards Dawkins but I believe new life sometimes is what a 2nd round playoff team needs.

???

Say what you want, but results speak for themselves, and the ENTIRE Whitehouse Athletic program is better than it has ever been. It is no longer just a Wally Dawkins basketball town, and never will be again. Whether he leaves or stays, things will keep rollin at da house!!!!!!! :happy65: :happy65: :happy65:

I think he means rolling in football's direction.

QUOTE from HOOPS4LIFE date='Apr 20 2008, 10:43 AM

It's in Bullard. Closer to his daughter going to KC? We'll have to wait and see. WH you have a good one, do what ever it takes to keep him, just my 2 cents

Why would they do that? They needed a new coach to come shake things up. I thought this was Change we could believe in.

QUOTE from HOOPS4LIFE date='Jun 21 2008, 10:51 PM

tomlin won't turn it down, he's done more in Bullard than what Wally did in WH. He's done it in less years, and a lot of people in Wh compalins about Wh not getting past 1st or 2nd round. Tomlin is a proven winner, don't mess this up WH

Welcome to 4A Mr. hoops and Coach Tomlin.

QUOTE GLORY BOUND date='Dec 4 2007

It would be very nice to see WH go deeper than one game into the playoffs in BB. Winning every game in district is sweet but year after year losing in the 1st one or two playoff games tells me there's a coaching issue.

Another Area Round loss. Looks like Glory Bound wants another new coach.

This is just a small sampling of the asinine quotes from the past and I'm sure part of the belief system that made Coach Dawkins leave town.

But the way I see it, Coach Tomlin may be the smartest guy in Whitehouse. He probably knows that once he makes it to the Regional Tournament, certain people will not be happy that they don't have the brightest star in town.

And just a heads up Coach Tomlin. Your assistant Alvie seems to drink heavily from the football kool-aid, which is what happens when football has their thumb in every pie.

What a great decision by the administration to help a guy out the door that dedicated over 20 years of his life to the basketball program and the community, and whose final season at Whitehouse was the deepest trip your school had ever made, and has still ever made, into the post-season as a 4A school. :happy65:

your in the toughest 4a region....whitehouse will never break the playoff curse....last year against soc was their best shot and they blew it....get used to it or get a tougher schedule....

I just wish somehow some way we could spend the first part of the seaon playing district and then spend the last half playing the non district schedule. It doesnt matter how tough a non district schedule you play when for the last 2 months of the season you have to play in such a weak district. Even when the district has been better the style of play here just doesnt prepare you for what you meet in the playoffs. That was true when I was there and its true now. We do not match up well with teams that play rough in your face ghetto ball. Never have and probably never will to be honest. there is nothing wrong with losing to a team that is flat out better than you...you shake their hand and go to the house, but that is what makes last night so frustrating. We were and are a better team that Waco U, but once again we get into a situation and start doing things that havent been done all year like playing tight and making mistakes. Its a mental thing not always physical sometimes the games are lost before the tip off. I am a big Coach Dawkins supporter, I COULD/CAN NOT stand how happy a certain faction of people were on here when he left. It was sickening after that man did so much for this town for so many years. I have battled it out on here with several of thos guys and its NOTHING against Coach Tomlin. I was at nearly every game and support him 100%. I hope he has a great career at Wh and i'll be there to support him every step. Its the guys who just refuse to give Coach Dawkins against respect that make me mad. We play basketball a certain way in East Texas and Whitehouse plays it as good as anybody, but the playoffs are a different animal and unfortunatley that is not going to change.
