The Texarkana Indians rallied for seven runs in the bottom of the eighth Saturday to beat defending state champion League City and win the 2009 title, 18-17. Texarkana lost its tournament opener to League City when New York Mets draft pick Ryan Gunhouse hit a walkoff homer in the bottom of the ninth. The Indians won their second game over Houston Milby, 16-0, and then eliminated Edinburg, 22-7. They beat League City, 17-9 to set up Saturday's showdown. The tournament was played at Clear Creek High School in League City and the wind blew out every day. There were 36 home runs hit in the tournament, including four by Texarkana's Caleb Dudley. John Stilson hit 2, Janson Carr from New Boston hit 1 and so did Heath Mayo from Whitehouse. In the first game Texas Rangers draft pick Shawn Blackwell started against Stilson, a Minnesota Twins draft pick. Randall Fant, a Milwaukee draft pick pitched Texarkana's first win over League City, allowing only 3 hits and striking out 11 in 7 innings. Stilson was selected Texas American Legion Player of the Year. In the tournament he had 25 plate appearances and reached safely 23 times. Michael Wacha of Pleasant Grove also pitched welll for Texarkana. Other players included Caleb Hensley of New Boston (winning pitcher in championship game), Garrett Aslin and Kendrick Henderson of Atlanta, D.D. Bigham of Texarkana, Ark., Duncan Collins of Trinity Christian, Logan Ashby of Pleasant Grove, Chris Culberson of New Boston and Jon Phillips of Pleasant Grove. Texarkana will now play in the Mid-South Regional at Enid, Okla., against state champions from Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi and Kansas. The winner advances to the World Series at Fargo, N.D.

Texarkana AREA is proud of these guys. Nice to see how a bunch that competed against each other in the area competed fiercely together to represent themselves. Congratulations to these young men, and good luck to them. Good job Tom and crew!

The Texarkana RRCU Indians defeated the Oklahoma Outlaws in Game One of the Mid-South Regional, 6-5. They will play Omaha, NE today at 4pm.

Highlights:

Stilson's Fastball hitting up to 97 mph, 17 K's between him and Fant.

Jon Phillips 2R Homer.

Jason Carr 3 hits, 2 doubles.

Heath Mayo ran into the wall hard in right field, but reportedly will be OK. Sounds like all out effort!

I agree Randall Fant was ver under rated. I thought he would go much higher than the 21st round. He is a real mild mannered kid. Needs a little more fire in his belly. He is going to make one solid pitcher for someone. Did he sign with Sox?

The Indians won their first game at the World Series beat Mt. Airy, Md., 3-2. John Stilson doubled home winning run in bottom of ninth. Michael Wacha went 8 innings on mound with Caleb Dudley pitching the ninth. Texarkana is scheduled to play either Festus, Mo. Saturday night at 10. Randall Fant will pitch for Texarkana.
