Tyler Lee's Gary Fleet Retires
Sunday, 20th May 2012 - 12:12AM
Gary Fleet has announced his retirement from coaching after 29-years working within Tyler I.S.D. Fleet has been the offensive line coach at either Tyler Lee (24-years) or John Tyler (5-years) for 29-years and has been considered among the most successful offensive line coaches in Texas High School Football history.

He was an all-state linebacker at John Tyler in 1979 and has coached numerous former all-state and eventual college football stars during his time in Tyler. Fleet played college football at Abilene Christian.

Fleet told David Smoak, "I just decided at this time of my life that I can't think about football all of the time and it's time for me to focus more on my other business endeavors. I can't coach without being intense, and I just can't maintain that intensity day-in and day-out like I once did." Fleet continued, "I have been so fortunate to coach with and for so many great people, too many to name, but we have a special bond."

Movie Day.....

Posted 2022-10-07 11:36:23, Post Count: 918

On this date in 1995, at the 67th Academy Awards ceremony, Martin Landau was awarded the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his work in "Ed Wood" (1994). This marked the first time in Oscar history that a performer in any category won for playing a movie star. A decade later, Cate Blanchett won a Best Actress in a Supporting Role Academy Award for her portrayal of Katharine Hepburn in "The Aviator" (2004), the first time a performer won an Academy Award for portraying an Academy Award-winning actor/actress.

In order to imitate Lugosi's voice and mannerisms, Landau watched approximately 35 Lugosi movies, and purchased Hungarian language tapes. With the tapes, he would "literally practice the language and see where the tongue would go." When Hungarian-born director Peter Medak saw the film, he called Landau to praise him. Medak said that Landau's accent sounded spot-on, because, "You are not an actor trying to do a Hungarian accent, you're a character trying not to do (one)."

Landau did not want to deliver an over-the-top performance. "Bela Lugosi was theatrical, but I never wanted the audience to feel I was an actor chewing the scenery... I felt it had to be Lugosi's theatricality, not mine."

Makeup artist extraordinaire Rick Baker was very concerned about the casting of Landau as Lugosi, seeing how they didn't share any similar facial features. Baker, being a very big fan of Lugosi and who had known director Tim Burton before the film, persued the job as makeup designer, fearing that a lesser makeup artist would do too much. Baker designed and created subtle appliances that would alter Landau's features to make him more resemble Lugosi (a set of ears, a nose, a chin, and an appliance to cover the fullness of his upper lip) that Ve Neill would apply on a daily basis. In addition to Landau, Baker and Neill would also win Academy Awards for their work.
