There were some major factors that created this vortex. This is all my opinion but my opinion was Brock would win at a neutral field and ref crew too.

1. Graham and the whole town had been wanting this game since Brock was going to move up. You could feel the earth move and their stadium has a flaw. The kids have to walk from the stadium to there dressing room with general public having access. The passion was intense. Brock players and coaches didn’t react well to it. More on this later.
2. officiating was horrendous. I don’t remember how many personal penalties but it was over 10+ to their 1 or 2 leading to some ejections. Mainly for retaliation. It was like the chapter working the game was looking the other way but got laser focused after something serious had happened.
3. Brock had gotten complacent with their early success.  Happens to good programs. Earlier in the season they played with a chip on their shoulder to prove that it was their time after such a great class graduating.
4. An altercation happened at halftime. Graham fans keep saying it was between the Brock coaches. Story around Brock was some former players of the head coach while at Weatherford High were intoxicated and telling the boys how bad they were leaving the field. Remember the first reason. One of the players Dad is a coach. He took offense and it got physical. Either way, police got involved. Coaches didn’t get to talk with the players and no adjustments were made.

Now with all that said, I think it was the best thing that could have happened to them.
1. They remembered they need to focus on the task. And they are laser focused.
2. Neutral site and refs and it was amazing the difference. Brock had two crucial penalties this game. The horse collar which was definitely a horse collar and an offsides on 4th and 3.
3. Brock learned their best lesson since I’ve lived here. They played with respect for the game. Instead of retaliation they helped every Graham player I saw up by offering a hand. Never got chippy with them. Cooler heads prevailed.
4. all that gave them a chance. That and pure grit and guts.

this may be the longest post I’ve ever had in all my years of Smoaky. But I’m proud of the effort this team has done. I don’t have a kid playing now but my kids played for other successful programs and won State Championships and I’m from Daingerfield. Best way I can say is this team reminds me of the 85 Daingerfield team. Supposed to being a rebuild year moving up to 4A but here they are going against Goliath Carthage. I had Brock penciled in this game from Day one.  It will be a great game.

When Gunter painted Brock’s back porch red in 2023, they also did not handle that adversity well.  A ton of personal fouls; it was pretty ridiculous.  Clearly, they don’t like losing, and they really hate getting spanked.  Regardless, I was rooting for them to win it all last year. That Malakoff game was a banger.  I hope they win, but I don’t like their chances.Â
