Keith Willis was once a star football player at University High, and now he's in charge of their football program. Willis was approved by Waco I.S.D. on Friday to replace Matt Carroll, who left to become head coach at San Antonio Roosevelt, "Once a Trojan, always a Trojan, this is such a great night for me and our family," Willis continued, "I think it's extraordinary what superintendent Dr. Bonny Cane and administration are trying to do with what is obviously a new commitment to this entire school district. They're trying to champion every single program and make those programs successful and I certainly want to be a part of that."

Willis, once a long-time assistant coach at crosstown rival Waco High, was 4-6 in his lone season at L.B.J., starting the season 0-5, changed their offense and won four straight before losing to Leander in the first-round, but now, he's back home in Waco, "I'm very proud to be back involved with Waco I.S.D. and especially the south Waco community, I was raised up in south Waco, started at Oakwood Elementary through the middle school system before playing at University High as a defensive back and running back before moving to the north side of town where I went to Jefferson-Moore High School."

Willis also played football at Sam Houston State University and with the Houston Oilers in the National Football League, but it all started in south Waco, "I'm so excited to get back to my community in south Waco, and what can you give back that's more thank helping shape the lives of a community where you grew up and that's what it's all about to me."

Prior to Austin L.B.J., Willis was the head coach for three years at Marlin High School, compiling a 15-19 recording, include first-round playoff wins in 2010 and 2011. His overall career record is 19-25.
