RETIREDFAN1 Posted May 14, 2024 Author Posted May 14, 2024 I thought this group might find this interesting. We know an elderly woman whose (much older and been deceased for 25 years) husband won a gold medal at the 1924 Olympics in Paris. She asked if we wanted to see it so I got to hold his gold medal in my hand! She is traveling to Paris for the games this year for a special 100 year celebration she was invited to.

RETIREDFAN1 Posted August 14, 2024 Author Posted August 14, 2024 Running deer shooting was an Olympic sport that was held from 1908 to 1924, and again in 1952 and 1956. The event involved shooting at a deer-shaped target that moved 75 feet across a 20-meter-wide opening at a speed of 4 seconds per run. The shooter stood 110 yards away and could take one or two shots at each run. The target had three concentric circles, with the smallest circle worth four points, the middle circle worth three points, and the outermost circle worth two points. A hit outside the circles but still on the target was worth one point. The maximum score for a single-shot run was 40 points, and the maximum score for a double-shot run was 80 points.
RETIREDFAN1 Posted August 29, 2024 Author Posted August 29, 2024 The 1960 United States Olympic basketball team is widely considered the greatest amateur basketball team ever assembled. Led by head coach Pete Newell, and fortified by the stellar play of Jerry West, Oscar Robertson, and Jerry Lucas, the US squad cruised to the gold medal in Rome going 8-0 against the rest of the world. The Americans dominated like never before topping the 100-point mark on five occasions while holding their opponents to under 60 in four games. Five players averaged double figures in points, paced by Robertson and Lucas at 17 per game. That all added up to an average margin of victory of better than 40 points per contest, extending America’s winning streak to 36 straight games in Olympic competition. The gold medal round saw the US dominate Brazil, 90-63, and signified the fifth gold medal for the Americans since basketball was added to the Olympic slate in 1936. The 1960 roster featured ten future NBA players including four consecutive Rookie of the Year honorees and three members of the NBA’s 50 Greatest Players of All-Time.
