The Truth Shall Set You Free

We are told to study God’s Word extensively. We are told to study God’s Word continually. We are told that we must always study God’s Word. This has always been the case, from the Old Testament to the New.

Ezra 7: 10

Nehemiah 8: 13

II Timothy 2: 15

We study because we must teach God’s Word to the world. However, there is another reason we should always desire to study God’s Word. That is because only God’s Word can set us free.

John 8: 31 - 32

There are many things that the knowledge of the Truth will set us free from. Today, we want to look at some of the things the knowledge of the Truth will free us from.

The knowledge of Truth makes us free from the bonds of ignorance. The old man, the one who was an alien sinner, is characterized by ignorance.

Ephesians 4: 17 - 24

This means that they are alienated from the life of God. However, some learned Christ, they heard Him through the teachings of others, and became enlightened, putting on the new man.

Ephesians 1: 17

Ignorance is NOT bliss. Ignorance promotes man-made religion.

Romans 10: 1 - 3

Ignorance promotes the worship of idols.

Acts 17: 23

Ignorance hinders faith. Ignorance promotes division. Ignorance makes men susceptible to false doctrine. Ignorance hinders our obedience. The darkness of ignorance is only dispelled by the light of Truth. The knowledge of Truth frees us from the bonds of ignorance.

The knowledge of Truth frees us from the bonds of prejudice. Prejudice is one of the worst enemies to the cause of righteousness. We see this in the prejudice of those in Judea.

John 1: 46

The prejudice of the Jews caused them to reject Christ. It caused them to reject the Gospel. It caused them to reject the Lord’s Church.

Their minds were made up and they were not wanting to be confused by the facts. Prejudice like this always perpetuates division.

Examining everything in the light of the Truth will remove prejudice, if we want it removed. There is no place in God’s Kingdom for prejudice, racism, sexism, or any other prejudiced attitude.

Colossians 3: 9 - 11

Both ignorance and prejudice will be removed if we have the habits of the Bereans.

Acts 17: 11

Knowledge of the Truth will set you free from slavery to ignorance and prejudice.

Knowledge of the Truth will set us free from the doctrines and commandments of men. Ignorance and prejudice have led to men accepting what other men have taught, and throwing out God’s Word. We can see the influence of man-made doctrine all around. Every denomination that exists, does so because they have thrown out God’s Word and made their own doctrine. We must never forget that the source of doctrine is what determines whether it is true or false. If something comes from rightly divided Scripture, it is true. If something comes from men, with no scriptural basis, or with perverted scripture, it is false.

What we see around us today with all the denominations, all the false religions like Islam, Mormonism, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and such is that people are more influenced by what does not come from God, than they are by God. This makes their worship worthless and useless.

Matthew 15: 9

This dishonors God, so we should preach the Word. Only the Word.

II Timothy 4: 1 - 2

Things that are taught from God’s Word must be received, honored, and applied to our lives. Things that come from men should never be placed above the things that came from God. That is why we need to continually be able to prove all things.

II Thessalonians 5: 21

Knowledge of the Truth frees us from slavery to ignorance, prejudice, and the doctrines and commandments of men.

Knowledge of Truth frees us from slavery to sin. Sin is the worst and most destructive enemy of humanity. Sin separates us from God.

Isaiah 59: 1 - 2

Sin brings about the death of our souls.

Romans 6: 23

Sin is lawlessness. It is a violation of God’s Word.

I John 3: 4

And every single human who has ever existed has sinned.

Romans 3: 23

Even those of us who are children of God will sin.

I John 1: 8

The only thing that shows us how to be saved from our sins is the Word of God.

Romans 1: 16

Since this is the case, we all need to know God’s Word. We all need to hear it and to learn it.

John 6: 45

Every case of conversion in Acts was a response to learning the Truth. This means we must apply truth to everything in our lives. We must live as the Bible shows us we must live. We must defend the Truth, and we must teach the Truth. This is expected of us by our King. It is absolutely necessary for salvation because we must be living faithfully unto death to be saved.

Knowledge of the Truth sets us free from ignorance, prejudice, the doctrines and commandments of men, and frees us from our sins. This alone should encourage us to study always, in order to grow in the knowledge and wisdom of God’s Word.
