  1. Marshall can put up points quick and in bunches when they are not turning the ball over or having drive killing penalties. First half was a bit sluggish for both teams, but Marshall seemed to wake up after the long pass that set up Kilgores only offensive score of the game. As lopsided as the score was, I feel Marshall could have put this game away earlier then they did. Kilgore showed some signs of life at times. They have an excellent kicker that could help win a few games for them on down the road. I felt Kilgore moved the ball their best when they put the big rb in the game and let him pound it a few times, and then use the play action off of it. If they can build off of that type of offense which is typical smash mouth Kilgore ball anyways, they should make the playoffs. Right now its looking like Jax, Whitehouse, Henderson will be the ones to beat. With the Kilgore vs Nac game deciding the last spot. As for Marshall, we look like we have settled down on offense after the many mistakes we made in zero week against Jax. If we don't lose the turnover battle we win that game. Young guys are stepping up on defense and making plays now. I think its safe to say if we play like we are capable of, we should at the least be a playoff team. I think we have a good shot at second place, or even first, if the Lobos get accepted into the Big 12. The SS game worries me a good bit, being that our weakness has proven to be pass defense so far this year.
  2. You missed Kilgore vs Marshall. I think that qualifies as a headliner just as much or more than a couple of those.
  3. We will see which 2 teams are just average after this week. Marshall and Jacksonville or Kilgore and Hallsville. I wouldn't put too much into the Marshall Jax game. It was just a typical Marshall first game, full of stupid penalties, turnovers, and lack of offensive timing. We also weren't ready for the pass happy Jax team that showed up out of nowhere. This game was won by Marshall until a late flag(roughing the passer)gave them another first and goal. I don't see any team but maybe Whitehouse beating them in district.
  4. Celina vs Daingerfield looks to be a good vote getter, but the Marshall vs Kilgore game has proven to be a hard fought nail biter every year. Even without the pregame Game of the Week title, it usually ends up being what should have been game of the week when its over.
  5. This is the first year under a new head coach, it will take some patience. Pine Tree is in the toughest district in 4a, so all those reps over the next couple of years against good teams will pay dividends on this teams long term development. Give them at least till the end of this season to start showing signs of growth as a team. Pine Tree will get better as the season goes along, and may get overlooked by a Mount Pleasant or a Hallsville and get a win or at least keep it respectable. They can hope for a different and easier district for the next 2 years and maybe fight for a playoff spot by then if this Coach is as good as advertised.
  6. My heart and my brain at this point says Marshall. This defense is built to stuff the run this year, and they have so far this season. Kilgore can stay in it if they catch Marshalls young DB's off guard like Jax did by putting the ball in the air most of the game. Kilgore will be tough, and being at home should give them a boost. Ill take Marshall 35-24. Unless Marshall plays like they did against Jax and turns the ball over in the redzone 4 times. Also Marshall has film to watch on Kilgore and their tendencies(not that kilgore is going to surprise you on offense). That really hurt Marshalls preparation against Jax being the first game of the year and not being able to see how much they pass the ball now. We were waay too focused on stopping the run, not expecting their passing game to eat us alive.
  7. Possible first round playoff match up. Marshall won the first game in non district by 10. Kilgore took the Bi District game by 3. Both teams are young in many areas, are 1-1, and just came off their first win of the season. Kilgore has played the tougher opponents thus far, but Marshall is coming off a huge confidence boosting win that was big after such a heartbreaking OT loss.
  8. Sorry, I think part of me was trying to ruffle some feathers, but it was between Gilmer and L E fans. Wasn't meaning to tear into Atlanta's nor NB's football programs. I know first hand that Atlanta has had a good football program for years. The real games start next week, so we all will be able to tell more about our programs soon.
  9. Yea, this scrimmage should help get you ready for a team like Gilmer. Not sure who Gilmer scrimmaged that will help them get ready for you all though. :whome:
  10. I will say after attending a few practices and watching the scrimmage, that we are a good bit bigger this year than the past few years. The D-Line, LB's, and most of the DB's all seem big this year. It doesn't look like we gave up any speed with the extra size either. It should be much harder for power running teams to bully us around this year from what I have seen. Also our RB's are bigger and stronger this year, but on the flip side they aren't as fast as usual. We will use our quick slot receiver when the speed is needed though.
  11. Mavericks get best of Leopards in live-action portion By Jon Dustin Brooks, News Messenger Friday, August 21, 2009 TEXARKANA — Marshall defeated Liberty-Eylau, 7-0, in the live-action portion of their scrimmage Friday night at the Leopards' Harris Field. The Mavericks tallied the only touchdown of the live action — which lasted for two quarters — after taking over on their own 7-yard line following a Liberty-Eylau fumble. Marshall then reeled off an eight-play drive that was capped by a 35-yard scoring strike from Brandon Fitzgerald to Daveon Williams. Pedro Farnsworth added the extra point. Fitzgerald finished the live-action play by completing 2 of 4 passes for 52 yards and one touchdown. Both receptions were made by Williams. Marshall, which committed no turnovers during the live-action set, later recovered another Leopards' fumble and used that to drive 57 yards to L-E's 15-yard line but a 33-yard field goal attempt by Jeovani Acuna sailed wide. Marshall head coach Thedrick Harris said he thought his team was surprisingly crisp, for the most part. "I really liked our kids effort," Harris said. "They played together. I thought the offensive line did an outstanding job up front and the running backs ran very hard and understood where the holes were." The Mavs had five player see carries during the live-action portion and another two see totes during the controlled part. Bryce French, who filled the backup quarterback role, led the way with 23 yards on four carries. Jamal Anderson also had 16 yards on four totes and Demeon Timmons had 14 yards on two carries. Marshall's defense allowed only one first down during the live action. "I thought the defensive line did a good job of getting penetration," Harris said. "I was pleased with their effort in tackling. Aaron Franklin and Jaquan Kelly also did a good job of bottling up their running backs." Harris said the only thing he wasn't pleased with was the Mavs' inability to control the ball during the controlled portion of the scrimmage, which Liberty-Eylau won, 1-0. The Leopards scored on their third play during the controlled set when Josh Webster hauled in an 11-yard touchdown catch that was set up by a 60-yard rumble from Tra Carson on L-E's first play of the afternoon. The Mavericks' defense recovered following the score, however, holding the Leopards to negative-eight yards on their next nine plays. Marshall's first-team offense advanced to L-E's 34-yard line on its first drive after a pair of big passes from Fitzgerald to Williams but a fumble upended the possession. Neither team scored during the second-team portion of the controlled scrimmage. Marshall got the closest, advancing to the Leopards' 32-yard line on its first drive. "Overall, I'm very pleased," Harris said. "Everybody was very attentive and whenever anybody made a mistake, they were anxious to go back and correct it." Marshall will open the regular season Friday by hosting Jacksonville. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Maverick Stadium.
  12. What about Marshall Jacksonville and Texas High John Tyler?
  13. Please keep us updated when the for sure time and place of the scrimmage will take place. Thanks
  14. I will be there hopefully. Will be nice to get in more than 2 plays this year though. Lack of scrimmage showed last year against Jacksonville in the first game. We won, but were playing as if that was our scrimmage. We need to get our young guys some work in this scrimmage. Our D-line is huge, but very inexperienced. The Lb's are all over the field with the return of A. Franklin, just hope he stays healthy and doesn't stay in the game long being a scrimmage. L E is 3a, but they usually seem to have enough athletes to give us a good scrimmage.
  15. Marshall Vs Jax: Marshall hasn't lost to Jacksonville at home since the series began. Jax should keep it close early behind their power running game, but I think Marshall will be too much in the end. Mavs win 31-14. Vs Shreve Huntington: Marshall takes this one as usual, but lookout for Fobbs from Huntington, hes an explosive athlete that should put up a score or two by himself. Mavs win 42-21 @ Kilgore: Always an exciting rivalry game to watch. Game will be at Kilgore , but that usually works in favor for Marshall some how. Kilgore is young, but you can bet Vallery will have his boys fired up at home for this one. Marshall pulls away late 31-17. @ Monroe Neville: I think Marshall knows to come into this game fired up after last years first half meltdown. Once we settled down and played a balanced type offense rather than run run run, we quickly put ourselves back into the type of game it should have been in the second half. Although it was way too late against a quality team like Neville. They are nationally ranked this year and its at Monroe, so it will be tough for me to pick a win here. This will be the tough wake up call game we need before district starts: Neville just too much for Marshall 3 hours from home in a different state with different REFS. Monroe wins a heated battle 35-28. Puts us at 3-1 heading into district, same as last year with the loss against the same team.
  16. We hear it every year. Team A is excited because they BEAT the more touted team B in a scrimmage. Its all poppycock I say. I've seen many teams hold out several star players for most if not all of a scrimmage. Scrimmages in no way will prove who the better team is in a real game. Too many factors come into play in a real game that is different in a scrimmage.
  17. Marshall vs Tyler Lee: There's been too many crazy games between these two in the old district. Would beef up our non district schedule and would make our team better if we come out of it healthy. Drop Huntington and make it happen co ach.
  18. Marshall made the playoffs in 2007(advanced to second round after the comeback win over TH), missed the playoffs in 2006.
  19. Longview Marshall Texas High Hallsville Sulphur Springs Mount Pleasant Pine Tree That would be one tough district if that ever happened.
  20. Smoaky, you hit an all time low on these rankings. Waay Off...JK. Will your weekly top 10's when the season starts be from a user poll too? Or will you still be doing the rankings yourself as usual? I know you will miss getting questioned and bashed every week if you don't.
  21. Marshall Qb:CJ. Byrd(Y.A Title if it was around back then and I actually got to ever see him play) RB:Junior Osborne(I know he wasn't a true rb, but I would put him there in 7 on 7) Wr:Kendrick Starling Wr:Rashod Turner(2002 state 7 on 7 MVP) Wr:Nick Lewis (Red) TE:Mario Walker LB:Aaron Franklin(speed and coverage skills at LB are more important in 7 on 7) LB:Derrick Jones Lb:Fola Fashola(sp?) S:Leroy Osborne S:Derrick Sneed Cb:Darius Jones Cb:Justin Jones(brothers both were in the shutdown corner category, although Darius played sparingly at Corner during the regular season) I know I missed several other past stars, including former Nfl players. Picked from players I can remember see play.
  22. Marshall never really looks good in 7 on 7, but has had several successful football seasons. The 2 State Finalist teams in 04 and 05 were pretty bad at 7 on 7. Also, Marshall's worst season in recent memory when we went 1-9(2002 I believe)was our best season of 7 on 7 ever. Won the Lufkin tourney that year and went on and did really well at state. So I'll stick with the not so good 7 on 7, if it means a winning season of real football.
  23. The athletes are from the 2009 class and they are all D1 players. However, the top talent from the 2009 class is not on the team. More based on the best grades and kids willing to play in it. Most of them know they will not play right away in college anyways, so they want to showcase their talents again, and what better way than earning a Gold medal in the process.
